There is Hope focuses on giving people tools to establish normal lives, enabling them to provide for the needs of their families and to graduate out of poverty. We provide training courses that are easily applied to starting a vocational career, giving the youth a chance to thrive and fulfil their potential. Financial independence gives women a voice and a choice, so we privilege female student enrolment.

There is Hope offers non-formal vocational training certified by the national Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (TEVET) Authority, for the refugee and host community. Our training offers practical skills irrespective of the students’ levels of literacy or previous academic achievement, widening job opportunities for those who had dropped out of school or were never able to attend due to poverty or disability. The programme began in 2015 and currently offers courses in Carpentry and Joinery, Bricklaying, Tailoring, Fabrication and Welding, and Plumbing. The courses take students through the theory and practical learning of their chosen vocations over a period of six months. Through these courses, we intend to provide skills that would enable these individuals to start their own businesses or seek employment. We also conduct business training throughout the duration of the courses in order to familiarize the trainees with the concept of running successful micro-enterprises. The business module focuses on profit calculation, record keeping, customer care and development of a business plan, among others. Our goal is to create graduates who can competently set up small businesses in their respective communities.

Since the inception of the skills training programme, we have trained and graduated over 800 young refugee and Malawian adults in the aforementioned trades.

Beginning January 2022, we will start providing informal training programme that will run parallel to the existing non-formal training programme.
