Faith, Leadership, and Change: Empowering Communities

In many parts of Malawi, communities face challenges that go beyond material needs. Disputes, domestic problems, and lack of guidance often leave people vulnerable, and without strong leadership, change struggles to take root. For spiritual and community leaders, having the knowledge and skills to guide others effectively is often limited, leaving many to lead without clear purpose or direction.

This is where There is Hope’s Leadership Development School steps in. At There is Hope, leaders are guided to think differently, to lead with purpose and reach their communities in ways that truly matter. The program targets pastors, chiefs, and other community leaders, people who are already close to the community and can drive meaningful change.

According to Pastor Robert Banda, one of the teachers at the school, equipping these leaders is crucial.

“Leaders who haven’t been trained often act without vision or direction,” he explains. “Here, we teach them how to guide people intentionally, care for their spiritual lives, and lead with purpose.”

The school focuses not only on theology but also on leadership, counseling, and conflict resolution, ensuring graduates can address the real challenges in their communities.

But leadership training at There is Hope is not just theoretical. Students are given the chance to practice what they learn through fieldwork, particularly in Missions and Evangelism. As part of this hands-on training, students visit villages, go door-to-door sharing the Gospel, and hold afternoon services. These activities allow students to connect with people, encourage them in their faith, and see the impact of their learning firsthand.

For Stonadi Dyson, a student, the fieldwork was eye-opening. For him, applying the lessons on the ground transformed not only his understanding of ministry but also his approach to leadership.

“Before joining the school, I thought everyone knew God,” he said. “But going into the communities showed me how much work is still needed. I’ve learned to lead with purpose and strategy, not just tradition or habit. The trips help people leave old ways behind and embrace Christ.”

Pastor Banda adds that these practical experiences reinforce the classroom lessons and help leaders grow in ways they could not in theory alone.

“The training teaches them to reach people at a deeper level,” he says. “It helps leaders think about the soul, not just the surface problems. Leaders equipped this way do not just manage; they inspire, guide and nurture communities.”

Through both classroom instruction and hands-on missions, There is Hope’s Leadership Development School strengthens leaders who are capable of making lasting change. For both Pastor Banda and Evangelist Dyson, the value of the school lies in its ability to equip people to lead with vision, compassion and practical skills, transforming not only their own lives but the communities they serve.
