From Camp to Confidence: How a Scholarship Sparked a New Beginning
When Mufariji Malasi escaped from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Malawi in 2016, the 19-year-old refugee faced an uncertain future. Rebuilding his education in a new country involved tackling language barriers, cultural adjustments, and financial difficulties. However, thanks to a scholarship program from There Is Hope, Malasi’s journey transformed into one of growth through adversity.
After joining Standard 5 at Katubzya Primary School in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, Malasi put in immense effort to catch up academically. His dedication earned him a place in the There Is Hope’s Secondary Education Scholarship program, an opportunity that would change the course of his life.

The scholarship provided more than just tuition; it offered stability. Attending St. Peter’s Secondary School in Mponela gave Malasi access to quality education, mentorship, and essential supplies, allowing him to concentrate on his studies without the pressure of financial burdens.
“The scholarship gave me peace of mind to focus on my studies,” he remarked. “It enabled me to learn more about life, to develop as an individual, and to envision a future beyond the confines of camp life.”
For his father, Ombeni Malasi, the impact was significant.
“Without this support, my son wouldn’t have come this far,” he shared.
The program not only protected Mufariji from the dangers of camp life, where limited academic prospects often lead young refugees toward substance abuse, but also instilled in him a sense of responsibility and ambition.
Now, the Malasi family has relocated to Australia, a transition made easier by Mufariji’s education and growth.
“The scholarship equipped him for this new chapter,” Ombeni stated.
Armed with knowledge and confidence, Mufariji is ready to help his family start afresh in Australia as they embark on a new beginning.
There Is Hope’s scholarships aim to do more than finance education; they empower refugees and vulnerable Malawians to rise out of poverty and create sustainable futures. For Mufariji, the program was a spark for personal development, demonstrating that focused educational support can change lives.
As he settles into Australia, his journey highlights the wide-ranging impact of investing in refugee education, one scholarship at a time.
This life-changing academic opportunity was made possible through the generous support of MB Stayton, whose education sponsorship helped pave the way for Mufariji’s remarkable academic journey in Secondary school, in Malawi.
