It was a perfect day. The sky was clear; the mood was friendly. It was a memorable date on There is Hope’s calendar because we were holding a special function at our Lilambwe centre.

We hosted one of our twice-yearly graduation ceremonies for students from There is Hope’s vocational training programmes. It was a multicultural event packed with people from different nationalities, some refugees from Dzaleka and Malawians from the surrounding community. It was one big show of unity as people who had been long displaced from their home countries, and those who were born and bred in the rural district of Dowa came together as one big family. The occasion was a direct indication that co-existence between refugees and local people is not only possible, but beautiful.

Most importantly, gracing the event were officials from Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA), senior chief Inkosi Msakambewa and senior chief Mkukula.

“By training these young people, There is Hope has indirectly trained their respective communities because the skills they have gained here will be used in their homes.” said the chief. “These students will inspire others to have the desire to register for There is Hope’s vocational training programmes.”

Mr. Rexford Kachepa, a representative from the ministry of labour, youth, sports and manpower development was the guest of honour.
A total of forty-four students graduated from this academic session, 16 in carpentry, 17 in tailoring and 11 in bricklaying. Fourteen of them received special recognition as the best students.

It was a colourful event as the graduating students from the tailoring course, dressed in bright orange clothes they designed, jubilantly lined up to receive their qualifications. The clicking sounds of cameras flooded the atmosphere as excited people took photos of the new graduates.

Senior Chief Inkosi Msakambewa had positive comments after the ceremony. Chief Msakambewa remarked that the event was just the beginning of a chain reaction that will benefit not only the graduates, but their communities.
“By training these young people, There is Hope has indirectly trained their respective communities because the skills they have gained here will be used in their homes.” said the chief. “These students will inspire others to have the desire to register for There is Hope’s vocational training programmes.”
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of labour, youths and sports, Mr. Rexford Kachepa encouraged the graduates to demonstrate their skills to their communities with passion. A visibly impressed Kachepa added that the event indicates that the number of skilled people is gradually increasing, which was a sign of commitment from There is Hope.

TEVETA official, Mr. Kidwell Banda announced plans to establish a partnership with There is Hope, saying that this means There is Hope would become a TEVET accredited training institution.

The event was spiced up by Salama Africa which displayed their silent dancing antics to the amusement of the participants. The guests were also treated to a comedy show from Dowa Travelling Theatre that had the everyone exploding with laughter at their sensational jokes.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid gap=”1″ item=”mediaGrid_ScaleWithRotation” grid_id=”vc_gid:1488587276464-81a7d50c1f92a690a329935435d86216-8″ include=”2588,2589,2562,2563,2585,2570,2568,2566,2569,2567,2571,2572,2583,2573,2581,2579,2578,2577,2576,2574,2586,2587,2564″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_empty_space height=”62px”][vc_separator border_width=”2″][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/6″][vc_column_text][avatar user=”Isaac Msiska”]Author[/avatar][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Isaac Msiska- Communications Coordinator at There Is Hope.
